Curriculum & Teaching

Expert and committed teachers, rich opportunities for challenge, a lively and orderly learning environment, high expectations and careful support – these are essential elements to foster an enduring love of learning

Progression Years 7-12

Girls in Year 7 take a wide range of subjects and their transition into secondary schooling is supported by ongoing guidance in study skills, time management and goal-setting.

After Year 7 some electives are introduced with girls able to take on additional languages (modern and ancient) and subjects ranging from Commerce to Coding.

Foundational skills such as essay-writing, research skills and information literacy are explicitly taught in a clear progression.

In the senior years, girls may choose to undertake either the HSC or the IB Diploma, both of which provide a strong foundation for further study.

Support and challenge

Students have different abilities and experiences to which good teaching must be responsive. We place a strong emphasis on differentiation within the classroom from day to day to ensure that students are challenged wherever possible and supported wherever needed.

Where girls have needs that require further adjustment, our Specialised Programs team can step in.

Technology

Technology is welcomed and integrated where it assists learning, but never promoted for its own sake. Much is written about technology in education but this is often out of proportion to its ultimate benefits.

Girls undertake a carefully devised K-12 program which incorporates coding, computational thinking, information literacy and underlying skills such as touch typing.

We are careful to ensure that the use of technology does not impede language acquisition and reading fluency or interfere with lively exchange of ideas and sense of community which are the foundation of a Queenwood education. In particular, devices are not permitted during recreation times when we enjoy seeing our students relate to each other face to face.
